iMac SSD Upgrade

Is Your iMac Running Slow?

But you don't have the budget for a new one.

Even if you spend $1,500 on a new iMac, it may still run slowly unless you invest a few hundred more to upgrade to a Solid State Drive (SSD). You can find numerous SSD upgrade reviews on YouTube, like this one: YouTube Video—just watch the one in the bottom right corner.

Unfortunately, upgrading the hard drive in an iMac requires special tools and expertise. While there are reliable components available, this is where I can assist you.

What’s Included and How Long Does It Take?

For customers in the Chicago area, the price includes pickup from your home or office, all parts (SSD, Thermal Sensor, Adhesive Tapes for the screen, etc.), and the installation of macOS (you can choose your preferred version) or the restoration of a Time Machine backup.

The repair is typically completed within 1-3 working days (usually 1-2 days), plus delivery time (sent with next-day delivery).

Our Guarantee

With over 10 years of experience repairing iMacs at Apple, you can order with confidence. Your machine will be treated with the utmost care. We exclusively use high-quality parts to ensure the best reliability and performance. I use only Crucial or Samsung SSDs, known for their top performance in benchmarks and backed by a 5-year warranty on their New V-NAND Technology drives. These brands have a long-standing reputation in the industry. To ensure flawless operation, a thermal sensor may be required for selected machines, and all components are sourced from reputable retailers.

What Is an SSD (Solid State Drive)?

Old machines could perform similarly to new ones because processor manufacturers have shifted their focus to power-efficient processors. Thus, both new and old machines might run at comparable speeds, though new ones are generally more energy-efficient.

The primary bottleneck in all iMac models is the traditional hard drive, which relies on outdated technology with spinning magnetic disks and read/write heads. Each operation on the machine requires reading or writing data, and the mechanical movement causes lag—especially with more demanding applications.

Imagine the processor (the brain) of the machine can read a book at a rate of 10 pages per second, but the hard drive (the hands) can only turn 2-3 pages in that same time. Much of the processor's capacity goes wasted. With an SSD, the drive can easily turn 10 pages per second, making the machine run approximately three times faster in real-world applications.

Please ensure you have a backup before your appointment. If you need assistance or advice on this, I'm happy to guide you during my call to book the appointment.

Important Notes:
  • If your iMac is still under Apple Warranty, please note that this upgrade will void it. It's best to consider this upgrade for older machines without any warranty (not due to poor workmanship, but because it’s not performed by Apple).

  • While unlikely, if you experience any issues with the SSD within 30 days and it's verified by an app like SMART Utility, I will replace it free of charge and refund any postage incurred. I chose these brands for their unmatched reliability.
